Getting Your Hot Tub Ready for Cooler Months (and Holiday Guests)

Every October I get the same kind of call: “We’re about to start using the spa a lot more, is there anything we should do first?” It’s exactly the right question. A little hot tub maintenance before the cold season saves you from finding problems at the worst possible moment, like the night you’ve invited friends over. Here’s the short list I give customers in Calabasas, West Hills and around the Valley.

Start With the Heater

The heater works hardest from now through winter. Fill the spa to the right level, set your usual temperature and see how long it takes to get there. If it’s noticeably slower than last year, or the display shows warnings, address it now. Our repair team can find the cause before it becomes a bigger issue.

Check the Cover

A good cover is your best defense against heat loss. Press on it, see if it feels heavy or waterlogged, and check that it fits snugly all the way around. A cover that’s lost its seal makes the heater run longer and the spa feel colder, even though the thermostat says everything is fine.

Refresh the Filter

Summer and fall debris leave filters worn and clogged. Deep clean yours, or replace it if it looks frayed or discolored. Clean flow protects the pump and heater, and it keeps water clear when usage goes up.

Consider a Fresh Fill

If it’s been three or four months since the last drain and clean, now is the perfect time. Fresh water, a cleaned shell and a clean system make the season’s first soak a lot more enjoyable.

Run a Full Test of Everything

Turn on every jet, test the lights, check the control panel and listen to the pump. It takes a few minutes and tells you if anything needs attention before it matters.

Plan for Heavier Use

More soaks mean more sanitizer use and more frequent testing. If holiday guests are coming, plan for extra testing and a bit of extra skimming. Consistency matters more than anything.

Where We Can Help

If you’d prefer to start the season with a professional check, our hot tub maintenance service covers filters, water, equipment and cover inspection in one visit.

Cooler Months FAQs

When should I start preparing my spa for cooler weather?

Early fall is ideal. It gives you time to fix anything that needs attention before you rely on the spa.

Do I need to winterize a hot tub in Southern California?

Not in the way people do in freezing climates. Most owners keep using their spas year-round, so the focus is on efficiency, water quality and equipment checks.

How can I reduce heat loss?

Keep the cover in good shape and closed when not in use. It’s the simplest and most effective step.
