When customers ask about hot tub cleaning, the next question is almost always, “What exactly do you do?” It’s a fair question, since many people assume it just means draining and refilling. In reality, a proper cleaning has several steps, and each one has a reason. Here’s the full process, in the order we do it.
Step 1: Check the Spa Before Draining
Before anything comes out, we look at the water, the cover, the filter and the equipment. This tells us how dirty the system is and whether anything needs attention, like worn parts or a filter that should be replaced.
Step 2: Flush the Plumbing Lines
This step surprises people. Residue builds up inside the plumbing, not just on the shell, and draining alone won’t remove it. We run a line flush product through the system to loosen that buildup, so it leaves with the old water instead of staying behind.
Step 3: Drain the Spa
Once the lines have been flushed, the spa is drained completely. We make sure it empties properly and that the water is directed somewhere safe and appropriate.
Step 4: Clean the Shell
With the spa empty, we clean the shell and surfaces using products made for spas. Done correctly, this removes oils, film and the ring that forms at the waterline, without harming the finish.
Step 5: Clean or Replace the Filter
A dirty filter undoes everything else. We deep clean it, or replace it if it’s worn, frayed or past its useful life.
Step 6: Clean the Cover
The underside of the cover collects moisture and residue. A quick cleaning keeps it from re-contaminating the fresh water.
Step 7: Refill and Balance
We refill the spa, then test and balance the water: alkalinity, pH and sanitizer. Starting with correct chemistry makes the first weeks much easier.
Step 8: Test Everything
Before we finish, we run the spa through its functions: heating, jets, circulation and the control panel. We want to see it working properly before we go.
Why Not Just Use Household Cleaners?
Dish soap, bleach and general cleaners can leave residue that causes foaming and can be hard to rinse out of plumbing. They can also damage surfaces and parts. Spa-specific products are designed to be rinsed away completely, which is why we use them.
Doing It Yourself or Calling a Professional
| Task | Comfortable DIY? | Why a professional helps |
|---|---|---|
| Rinsing the filter | Yes | Easy, and best done often |
| Wiping the shell lightly | Yes | Simple upkeep between cleanings |
| Flushing the plumbing lines | Possible | Takes the right product and timing to be effective |
| Full drain, clean and refill | Possible | More steps to get right, and a good chance to inspect equipment |
If you’d rather skip the work, our hot tub cleaning service handles every step above. We work with homeowners in West Hills, Winnetka and Reseda, and across the west Valley.
Professional Cleaning FAQs
Do I need to be home during the cleaning?
It helps to be there at the start and the end. You don’t need to stay for every step.
Will you notice if something is wrong with my spa?
Often, yes. A cleaning is a good chance to spot worn parts, leaks and filter issues before they become bigger problems.
Can I use the spa right after it’s refilled?
It needs time to heat and for the water to stabilize. We’ll tell you when it’s ready.
Is it okay to clean the shell with a magic eraser or household spray?
It’s best to avoid them. Use cleaners made specifically for spas, so nothing harmful remains in the water.
