Hot Tub Cleaning: How Often Should You Really Drain and Refill?

If you search for hot tub cleaning advice, you’ll find a number that gets repeated everywhere: every three to four months. It’s a decent starting point, but it isn’t the whole story. The right schedule depends on how big your spa is and how often it’s used. Here’s how I help owners figure out the number that fits their spa.

Why Water Needs to Be Replaced at All

Sanitizer keeps water safe, but it can’t remove everything. Over time, dissolved solids, body oils, lotions and minerals build up in the water. Eventually the chemicals have to work harder just to keep the water looking decent, and the water starts to feel off. Replacing it is the only way to reset the balance.

A Simple Formula to Try

Here’s a rule of thumb many spa professionals use: divide your spa’s capacity in gallons by 3, then divide that number by the average number of people using it each day. The result is roughly how many days you can go between refills.

Example: Say your spa holds 400 gallons. Divide by 3 and you get about 133. If two people soak most days, divide 133 by 2, which gives you about 66 days, or roughly two months. If it’s mostly used on weekends, the number stretches out.

Treat this as a guide, not a rule, and always follow your spa manufacturer’s recommendations.

What Changes the Schedule

  • Heavy use: more soakers and longer sessions mean faster buildup.
  • Debris: windy weeks and falling leaves, common in the Valley this time of year, add organic material.
  • Sanitizer type and consistency: well-managed water lasts longer.
  • Hard water: high mineral content can shorten the interval.

Signs You’re Overdue

  • Water that turns cloudy again soon after balancing
  • Foam that doesn’t go away
  • A persistent odor
  • Needing more and more chemicals to keep levels steady
  • A slimy feel on surfaces

If you recognize two or more of these, it’s time, no matter what the calendar says.

What a Good Drain and Refill Includes

A proper cleaning isn’t just draining and refilling. It also means flushing the plumbing lines, cleaning the shell, and cleaning or replacing the filter, followed by balancing the new water. That’s what makes the fresh water stay fresh. Our hot tub cleaning and maintenance service covers all of those steps, and our weekly spa service keeps things on schedule between drains.

We serve spa owners in Woodland Hills, Tarzana and Encino, among many other nearby communities.

Drain and Refill FAQs

Is every three months always right?

It’s a good average, but heavy use can shorten it and light use can stretch it. Use the formula and the warning signs together.

Can I just add more chemicals instead of draining?

Only for a while. Chemicals can’t remove dissolved solids, so the problem keeps coming back until the water is replaced.

Is fall a good time to do it?

Yes. Starting the cooler months with fresh water and a clean system is a smart move.

How long does a cleaning take?

It depends on the size of the spa and how long it takes to drain and refill. We’ll give you an idea when you book.
