Your First 30 Days With a New Hot Tub: A Simple Care Guide

Hot tub installation day is exciting, but what you do in the weeks after it matters just as much. The first month sets the habits that decide how your spa looks, feels and performs for years. I walk new owners through this at the end of every installation, and here’s the short version, so you can keep it handy.

Days 1 to 3: Settle In and Test Often

Fresh water behaves differently from water that’s been balanced for a while, so it needs a bit more attention at the start.

  • Test the water every day or two and adjust in small steps.
  • Keep the cover on whenever the spa isn’t in use.
  • Learn the control panel: temperature, jets, lights and any error messages.
  • Raise the temperature to your preferred setting gradually, if it isn’t there already.

Week 1: Build the Basics

By now you should know how your spa feels and how it handles use. This is the week to set up your routine.

  • Test two or three times a week and keep a simple log.
  • Skim the surface each time you use the spa.
  • Rinse your shower and lotions off before soaking, since they speed up water breakdown.
  • Check the water level and top it off if needed.

Week 2: Your First Filter Rinse

Pull the filter, rinse it with a hose and put it back. It takes about five minutes, and it’s one of the most useful habits you’ll build. This is also a good time to shock the water, especially if you’ve had guests.

Weeks 3 and 4: Make It a Routine

  • Stick to your testing schedule so it becomes automatic.
  • Look at the cover and make sure it seals and drains water properly.
  • Listen for new sounds from the pump or jets.
  • Think about how often you actually use the spa, because that decides how often it needs service.

Day 30: The Check-In

At the one-month mark, do a deeper filter cleaning, review your water log and decide how you’d like to handle upkeep from here. Some owners prefer to do it all, others want help, and both are perfectly fine. If you’d like support, our hot tub maintenance service and weekly spa service take the routine off your hands.

Signs to Watch For

Call us if you notice persistent error codes, water that won’t balance after a few adjustments, unusual noises, or any leak around the spa. Early questions are always welcome, and it’s easier to fix something small than something that has grown.

If you installed your spa with our hot tub installation team, you already have our walkthrough, and you’re welcome to reach out any time you want a refresher. We support spa owners in Reseda, Winnetka and the surrounding area.

New Hot Tub Owner FAQs

Why does new water need extra attention?

It hasn’t had time to stabilize, so levels can shift more in the first days. Frequent testing helps you catch changes early.

How often should I rinse the filter?

Every week or two is a good habit, with a deeper clean about once a month.

When should I do my first drain and refill?

Many owners plan for about three to four months, depending on usage. Follow your spa manufacturer’s guidance as well.

Is it normal for the water to look slightly different in the first week?

Small changes can happen as the water settles. If it turns cloudy or smells off, test it and adjust, and call us if it doesn’t clear.
